Castle and Marlwood Schools
These schools are located in South Gloucestershire, to the north of Bristol. This LEA is roughly in line with national average scores in terms of GCSE and post-16 performance. Castle School is an 11-18 mixed comprehensive with approximately 1700 pupils. An above average proportion of the pupils at this school come from materially advantaged and educationally-aspiring backgrounds. Marlwood school is a former grammar school, and is now an 11-18 mixed comprehensive with approximately 1300 pupils. Although the school population is diverse in nature, it includes a higher than average proportion of pupils from materially advantaged and educationally aspiring backgrounds. It is very popular and is over subscribed.

Sandfields Comprehensive School
This school is based in the Neath-Port Talbot Unitary Authority in South Wales. Sandfields is situated on the Sandfields public housing estate, a socially deprived area of Port Talbot, which was built in the late 1960s for employees of British Steel. A large proportion of pupils are eligible for free school meals (approximately 40%). 10% of the schools cohort are special needs.

Walker Technology College
Walker Technology College is based in the Newcastle upon Tyne local education authority. The school is a mixed comprehensive school with around 1300 pupils. This school, and its LEA, faces considerable socio-economic challenges, coupled by population decline. Standards of attainment are lower than the national average at every key stage.
